Staying
in a castle hotel in Europe speaks of the ultimate in romanticism.
Whether its history,
location, lore,
haunted footsteps, luxurious legacy
or just the unique feeling of a special lodging. Finding a castle hotel
lodging to stay in can take a bit of research. Some are listed in hotel
search and booking sites, some are only available through dedicated lodging
organizations or hotel property groups, some must be contacted directly
through phone or email. Castle hotels are for the most part rarely in
an actual castle itself. Most are lodgings accomodations in a connected
or nearby building, like a converted hunting lodge, coach house, nearby
ale house, ect. Many "castle hotel" lodgings are not really
castles, the fortified kind with walls and moats, but historic manor
houses, some earlier ones are defensive manor house. They don't have
outer walls, but some defensive elements to the house itself. In Germany,
the distinction is made in the language, like the difference between
a Schloss and a Burg. Perhaps one of the most famous of German castles
Schloss Neuschwanstein, which gave Walt Disney the inspiration for his
Magic Kingdom Castle, is not a really castle at all, but as the name
implies a schloss. A Schloss is a palace or manor house, a burg is a
defensive castle. Unfortunately,
under either description Neuschwanstein is not a hotel. In Italy, the
difference is Villa and Castel or Castello. In France "Chateau" can
be either, though "Fortress" is
more a purely defensive castle, but most all true early fortress castles
in France are ruins, with earlier structures completely replaced by great
manor house chateaux, many chateau in France are private houses or museums.
