THREE HOTEL BARGAINS IN NICE
For a budget trip to the French Riviera
The French Riviera is known as
the playground of the rich and famous, but not everyone who visits can
afford the 5-Star luxury treatment. Going to the Cannes Film Festival
but don’t plan to pack a tux? Want to go topless on the beaches
of the French Riviera, or just ogle while your new bride shops the Avenue
Jean Medicin or the Nice branch of Galleries Lafayette. Taking the kids
and looking for a clean and pleasant hotel to fit your budget travel plan
in Nice? The Choice Hotel group has properties all across Europe with
excellent locations at very reasonable prices. Choice Hotel properties
can vary somewhat in style and presentation, but the brand assures a certain
level of service and amenities and usually have bi-lingual staff and 24
hour front desk.
Here are three hotel properties in Nice, the capital of the Cote d’Azur for the budget minded visitor to the sunny south coast of France.
The
Best Western
Hotel
Roosevelt is
closest to the beach, about three blocks from the Promenade des Anglais, the
main
boulevard
fronting the blue Mediterranean. Located at 16 rue Maréchal Joffre
Boulevard, the Hotel
Roosevelt is two streets
from
the
promenade
section
where traffic
is blocked for pedestrians to dine and drink at the sidewalk cafes, where
street performers entertain. A short taxi ride gets you to Cote d'Azur
Airport and it’s about 8 blocks from the train station. This comfortable Best Western hotel
which has been recently renovated and updated offers several rooms with
balconies and is very popular for its location. Sometimes reservations
here
can
sell
out before
others
in a similar price range.
The Comfort Hotel Boreal is in an almost ideal location for the tourist traveling by rail. The Nice Gare is 5 minutes walk, the beach 10 minutes, and the hotel is on a quiet street just steps from the main Avenue Jean Medicine where the Nice branch of the famous French department store Galleries Lafeyette is just around the corner. The Hotel Boreal has its own sidewalk bar/restaurant with outdood tables for street watching and is surrounded by many others nearby in this central neighborhood. 66 rooms with wireless internet. The only knock is the room décor is a little plain and the foam mattresses a little on the firm side for my tastes, but the rooms are very clean and the service most pleasant.
A slightly higher price is the Quality Hotel de Madrid on the Rue du
Belgique. Closest to the Nice Gare main train station, only a block away,
this hotel has been recently restored in a colonial style. On a corner
with street views. 44 sound-proofed rooms, air conditioned with bath
or shower choice. The rooms are a little larger and the hotel has a very
warm feel. Wired for computers and common rooms for meetings. Excellent
for the business traveler.
Travel from Nice to Cannes or to Monaco on the SNCF, France’s national railway. From the Nice Gare main rail station, the line through Nice runs along the Cote d’Azure from Genoa, Italy to Marseilles. Cannes is about 30 minutes to the west of Nice and Monaco 15 minutes the other way, with stops from Menton to Antibes. Multiple day travel passes can be bought at kiosk machines in the Gare for travels back and forth. And the TGV high speed train to Paris or Lyon is scheduled twice a day. Europcar and Avis Rentals can be pick-up at the rail station. Hertz and another Europcar are near the Promenade des Anglais. © Bargain Travel Europe
