EUROPEAN CASTLES INSTITUTE
Philippsburg Castle - Braubach
Where better to have a library
about all things castles except in a castle. The European Castles Institute
(EBI) for the study and preservation of castles is housed in the renovated
Philippsburg Castle along the Rhine River in the town of Braubach. Philippsburg
Castle was built by Landgrave Philipp II of Hessen-Rheinfels in 1568
who felt the main fortress castle of Marksburg, constructed high on a
hill above the town, though perfect for defenses of the middle-ages (See Castle Marksburg)
was too spare for the living comfort for a regal Renaissance man. Some
of the castle's outer portions were destroyed for the building
of the railroad line along the Rhine in 1861. The staircase tower in
the west residential section and the half-timbered gate building are
still
intact
from the original.
Philippsburg
castle is now most notable as the repository of a unique library of
more than 25,000 volumes
about every known castle or palace in Europe, one of the
most extensive of its kind anywhere. The European Castles Institute
(Europaishces Burgen Institut) , also maintains a collection of castle
and palace building plans, a
collection of graphics, photographs and post cards, videos and CD’s.
Aside from books about castles, there are also books on medieval history,
art
history, landscape gardening, castle renovation and preservation, descriptions
of journeys, myths and legends. (See Brothers
Grimm Fairy Tale Road Museum). Most of the collection
is in German, but some in English. They even have a few extra volumes
for sale.
Castle Construction and History Institute
The
institute was established by the German Castles Association for the
Preservation of Historic
Buildings
(Deutsche Burgenvereinigung DBV)
founded in 1899 as the oldest private organization for the preservation
of historic buildings in Germany and accepts memberships for those
interested in preserving the mystery, history, romance and beauty of
castles. It
collects historic records and resources regarding castles (see Wartburg
Castle), organizes academic conferences, seminars, study
trips and publishes specialists
journal "Burgen und Schlösser" four times a year. The
European Castles Institute lies near the DB railway tracks
with the Braubach station short walk. By Rhine cruise boat the ferry dock
is a few minutes walk as well. Just cross the road and under the railroad
track to the narrow old street and turn right, follow the signs though
the old 16th Century buildings. © Bargain
