A BIT OF DISNEYLAND
IN OLD EUROPE?
Milan Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and
the Duomo
Any
trip to Milan you will likely find your way to the Piazza del Doumo
where Milan’s sample of gothic cathedral architecture will impress
with it’s ornate filigree. Massive and complex, the Milan Duomo
is not the most elegant of the gothic cathedrals, falling a little
in the “more is less” category of excess, but an impressive
example. Constantly under repair, some part of the pale golden stone
is almost always under cover or behind
scaffolding, but access to the roof provides for a close up view of
the intricate mason masters stone carving art and pigeon’s eye
view of the city. Be aware of street scammers who will try to shove corn into your hand to feed those plentiful pigeons and then pester you for money, or some who will approach you to sign for a charity and demand money.
Just
off the Piazza, stop for a Milanese style lunch in the world’s
first indoor shopping mall, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, built in
the 1870's, a cruciform structure, like a "cathedral of shopping" with
an elegant high arched glass ceiling that protects you from the Lombardy
rain
as you stroll from the Duomo piazza on the one end to the La Scala
Opera house on the other. And
although this is the original, you get an odd
sense upon entering that, gee, it looks just like Disneyland…or
Las Vegas attempts at recapturing this old world style. But here you
can get a real Milanese scalopine and go stylin' Italian in a real
Borsalino hat. © Bargain
