HOTEL VILLA KINZICA - LAGO d'ISEO
Romantic Hideaway on Northern Italy's Other Lake
One
of the less familiar lakes of Lombardy, much smaller than Lake Garda
to the east and Lake Como, famous
for it’s homes of the wealthy and
movie stars like George Clooney to the west, Lake Iseo (Lago d’Iseo)
is a perfect northern Italian romantic getaway spot. Carved by a glacier
from
the alps
on the Oglio River, the lake sits at the foot of steep sloping mountains
in the center of the Franciacorta wine growing region of Lombardy with
Bergamo
and Milan near it’s southern end. The vistas of the lake
from the winding road into the hills around it are magnificent, and very
popular with bicyclists and the motorcycles that roar around the curves
with abandon.
Three
small villages line the lake’s eastern shore, Sulzano, Marone
and Sale Marasino, and one more inhabits the large island which dominates
the center of the lake, Monte Isola. One of the best bargains in all
Europe
is the ferry ride from Sale Marasino to Monte Isola, 2 euro, perfect
for lunch on the lake shore and hiking on the island’s mountain
slopes. The ferry line Navigazione Lago d’Iseo offers several
boat tours of the lake, including romantic dinner cruises with music
and a DJ
for dining
and dancing on the intense blue waters of this deep Italian lake. Visit
the islands Loreto and Santo Paolo where the Lombard dukes made their
own vacation getaways, building monastery churches and castle fortresses.
The villages present a variety of concerts, festivals and other events,
both modern and traditional throughout the year.
The Hotel Villa Kinzica, named for a damsel of romantic
legend, is a 4 star Charme & Relax property just on the edge of Sale Marasino,
a short walk from the center of town and the ferry dock across
from the ancient village’s Baroque style church, a local landmark.
Very reasonably priced and set in a garden overlooking the lake shore,
the
villa hotel is a quiet and elegant getaway with lounges furnished
as if in a private Lombardy duke’s home, feeling like the lap
of luxury and each sound-proofed room features painting by master
artist
Vittorio
Viviani.
Where
to eat? The Ristorante Vela just south from Marone, along
the riviera road which hugs the
lake shore, looks from the street like
a roadside snack-stand,
but once inside. a packed and a popular local family operated restaurant
offering fresh fish dishes and wines
from the local Franciacorta vineyards, a view which looks out
on Loreto Island and a wall full of glowing reviews from Italian food
magazines. And if Italian
gourmets single out a restaurant, that’s saying something.
How
to get there? Ryanair flies from London to Bergamo or Brescia or fly
direct to
Milan. Rent a car from Brescia, Bergamo
or Linate Milan, Lago d'Iseo is about 40 minutes, or by rail, the Sale
Marasino station is within walking distance of the Hotel Villa Kinzica.
A variety
of other lodgings and bed & breakfasts can be found in the area
from Iseo to Pisogne. © Bargain
