BUCERIUS KUNST FORUM ART MUSEUM IN HAMBURG
American Art travels to Europe
The
Bucerius Kunst Art Forum has only been around since 2002 but has become
one of the principal cultural
institutions in Northern Germany.
The art museum which presents themed art exhibitions from collections
on loan rather than having a permanent collection, is located in the
Rathausmarkt market plaza neighboring the Hamburg Rathaus (City Hall)
and near the canal locks which separate the Alster lakes from the canals
to the Elbe River. The exhibition space is the columned building from
the early 20th Century and Named for Gerd Bucerius co-founder and publisher
of Germany’s well know Der Zeit newspaper, the museum is funded
by the ZEIT Foundation. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. with special "Lunch" and "After
Work" tours. The Bucerius Kinder Kunst Club is a program for kids
to be introduced to art through a painting class connected with the exhibition
theme.
Looking
beyond Europe “150 Years of American Art 1800-1950” focuses
on the origins of a genuine American school of art got its inspiration
from European painters but took its own distinctive direction. The exhibition
will feature masterpieces from American artists like Thomas Cole, John
Singer Sargent, James Whistler, Edward Hopper. The exhibition will cycle
in three different themed shows over three years from 2007 to 2009 covering
the “Hudson River School”, “Portraits of the Guilded
Age” and “American Realism”.
150 Years of American Art collection cycle starts with "Creating an American Art: Masterworks from the Wodsworth Atheneum Museum of Art" running February 24 to May 28, 2007. America’s first home grown school of landscape painting from 1825 to 1875 which eclipsed portraiture with dramatic images of natural wonder Niagara Falls, Yosemite Valley and the bright leaves of autumn as subjects. "Modern Life: Edward Hopper and his Time", the final segment of the exhibition runs from May 9 to August 16, 2009.
