MINIATURE WONDERLAND MODEL RAILWAY – HAMBURG
Railroad World in the Speicherstadt Harbor
As the real world seems to keep shrinking, the miniature world in Hamburg keeps growing. This truly amazing collection of model railways located in one of the historic harbor warehouses of Hamburg offers a jaw-dropping look at landscapes and cities in miniature. Not only trains, running on schedules through mountain tunnels, over bridges and through European city centers with timed stops at rail stations, but highways of miniature cars in traffic jams and an international airport with jet planes taking off and landing. If you think you’ve seen impressive model train sets, you haven’t seen anything like this before.
Beginning in the year 2000, two brothers Frederik and Gerrit Braun set out to build the largest model railway system in the world. They started in December of the new millenium, building and adding environments, with now over 1,000 square meters of area and ever expanding. The landscapes through which the complex system of hundreds of computer operated model trains run in a dizzying dance, range from the local Hamburg metropolitan environment, to the towering Alps gorges and even the red rock canyons of the American West.
Depending on how you count, the Miniatur Wunderland of Hamburg is the largest model railway system in the world (competing with the similar model railway world in Berlin). Visitors to the wonderland of Hamburg, located on multiple floors of the former rug shipping warehouse can admire different countries with their locally accurate trains. Completed sections include Hamburg, Harz, Austria, America and Scandinavia, with open construction sites for other regions, so visitors can observe the construction. Building plans include Italy, France and Africa, England and even futuristic landscapes.
The 200 square meters Hamburg section includes all of Hamburg’s main attractions such as the harbor with ships, the iconic Michelskirch and the animal park. With over fifty thousand miniature “Wunderländer” (as the shrunken metropolis’ inhabitants are called) the miniature replica of Hamburg is a bustling city. Behind the scenes tours are offered for small groups (for tours in English call in advance).
